………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………Samuel Marin Belfond on the Narrative Abstraction serie
Paris, France - 12/2022

On the canvas, there is an orange or a cyan or a red disk, which may only be a disk, or may be a sun from another system, or an electron whose charge attracts other particles - invisible to the human eye. Around the disc: fine lines, drawn with a ruler ; curves, acrylic, lumpy, freehand-painted. These lines like this disk might represent an infinitely large scale, or an infinitely small one, a spatial or molecular landscape, or none of these.

The abstraction of Alex Pariss’s paintings invites us to explore, so we may have to ask
ourselves : where might it lead us ?

Into a travel in time, a raid through references in art history ?
The kinetic dimension, which enables the eyes to travel through the painting’s layers, is
perhaps not a destination, a tradition in which Alex Pariss’ practice would be inscribed, but
rather a starting point: the basis of a relationship, an interaction, with the viewer. However, this interaction is not only sensory, in the manner of those thought by the precursors of Op art, from Alberto Biasi to the GRAV artists like François Morellet or Julio Le Parc. The viewer’s gaze is invited to travel, to go beyond this only kinetic dimension and to dive into other worlds. We may then consider that Alex Pariss’ paintings generate narrative interactions.

These paintings are somehow tinted with Memphis’ belief in the agency of chance, the
synthetic and anhistorical experience of the network, aestheticized by the V a p o r w a v e
trend. But Alex Pariss perhaps only invites us to explore the narratives that lie within each of us.
Abstraction, kinetic lines, compositions playing with scales and levels of the gaze, become the springs of a kind of pareidolia of fictions, rather than forms.
A man of my generation may see in them a hallucinated panel of Neon Genesis Evangelion, a mecha and psychoanalytical anime broadcast in 1995, of its predecessor Akira (1982), or the countershot of a scene of the pre-digital adaptations of Dune, whether it is by Lynch or Jodorowsky. These references might also be shared by the artist.
What about others?
There is some richness in saying that we might not be able to answer this question.
To say that the encounter with an artwork, when it meets the intimacy of our memory,
becomes «individuating». Such encounter is not the meeting of two absolutes - an absolute
reality of the artwork, with a unique and interchangeable individual - but rather the meeting of two singularities: those which echo between fragments of the work, visible or not, and snippets of reactivated memories, of common references which interpenetrate without saying a word.
Thus, the disk and the lines and the curves are all that you want them to be, as long as you
are willing to see something else.

Terni, Italia - 11/2022

CR: I chose Horizon as the title of this edition of Gemallarte 2022, to remind us of the importance and power of that imperceptible line suspended between the visible and the invisible that contains everything imaginable and unimaginable in the universe. Being able to go beyond is the key to everything. Even our existence. Alex Pariss, crossed that line, crossed the horizon, imagining a reality where an even sun can rise under a bridge. Anyone can see anything in these perfect and beautiful spheres, but their meaning is beyond any possible conception. The artist has given another sun, another possibility, to a world that very often fails to do so. When Alex and I passed under the bridge where the fresco was created, we realized how much attention should be paid to places that become synonymous with an existence that is sometimes abandoned and left aside. Putting a little light, here too, means much more than putting a little color. Pariss' mural inspires hope and draws lines for new horizons. And I want to hope that through art, this too is possible.

Alex, thanks to your work today, our city has another sun. Another sun means another possibility, new horizons are possible, this was only possible through the power of art. What is the importance of this work for you?

AP: The Sun is a star extremely represented in all civilizations. It is one of the great symbols of life on earth. Bringing prosperity, warmth and well-being, its power is such that it is in many cultures adulated as a deity. Its presence in our minds is unique because it is one of the sources of our creation on this planet. Without light, life on earth would not exist. Also, its elliptical shape plays an important role in my aesthetic approach because it is directly linked to the symbolism of the "Circle" and therefore of unity, of harmony, exerting a real fascination on the imagination and appears as a universal figure of contemplation and meditation. Integrating this abstract element in the architecture of the city, the meeting place of the citizens, is in my opinion a step made to speak to the unconscious of the public. The Sun/Circle has the strength to bring people together with serenity.

CR: Working in the open air is a dialogue that addresses everyone, the viewer is free to appreciate the work by himself, in complete autonomy, unlike inside a museum or a gallery, the images acquire a universal value, this is where the strength of urban art lies, how important is this element for you?

AP: I asked myself a lot of questions about what urban art could bring to the art world in general and I made the analysis that it had this capacity to be inscribed where it wants, when it wants, without real constraint. This may displease some people because there is indeed food for thought, but I have the intuition that urban art has become more than a simple movement, for me it is the ultimate and universal support that can accommodate all mediums and artistic movements, today it is more a question of "context" and "space" than of artistic approach as was the case of graffiti in the 80s. Urban art wants to be libertarian and democratic, which naturally generates the appearance of artists of all horizons, from the most amateur to the most confirmed. It is a vector, a bridge between an uninformed public and more elitist arts, teaching the inhabitants to feel interest for visual arts and culture in general.

CR: We who work in the art world have a very important task. Ours is a real mission. Culture is a primary necessity in the life of every human being. I cannot do without it, I could never live without it and I work with determination so that each person can learn to be moved by the richness of art. Your work, in addition to having an aesthetic value, has an ethical value, you have managed to leave an important message, and that is what counts. No one passing in front of your work will be able to remain indifferent, and knowing that any passer-by can stop even for a second to observe and reflect, excites me. Thank you Alex.

AP: Thank you Chiara for your enthusiasm and your investment. Art and culture have no boundaries and allow us to open doors beyond mere entertainment. They arouse our curiosity, develop our senses and refine our thinking for a better understanding of the world. Promoting culture in all its forms can only bring renewal in our values, our mentalities, our morals, sometimes overtaken by events.
